Connecting a microfinance institution's core banking to NYLOS

A growing Ethiopian microfinance institution needed its branch operations, loan book and core banking system to share one source of financial truth — without ripping out the system it already ran on.

Client: A microfinance institution in Addis Ababa

The challenge

The institution ran a dedicated core banking system for savings and loans, but finance, branch budgets and statutory reporting lived in spreadsheets and a separate ledger. Month-end meant manual re-keying across systems — slow, error-prone, and impossible to audit cleanly.

Any new finance system had to speak to the existing core banking platform rather than replace it, and it had to satisfy National Bank of Ethiopia reporting expectations and IFRS for SMEs.

What we built

NYLOS built a custom adapter between the institution's core banking system and the NYLOS Finance & Accounting module, so posted transactions flow into a single double-entry general ledger automatically.

Branch-level budgeting was activated so each branch tracks against plan in real time, with role-based approvals mirroring the institution's hierarchy.

Statutory and management reports were configured to pull from the unified ledger — eliminating the month-end re-keying step entirely.

Modules used

  • Finance & Accounting
  • Custom Applications
  • Budgeting Management

Results

  • One reconciled source of financial truth across branches and the core banking system
  • Month-end close no longer depends on manual re-keying between systems
  • Branch budgets visible to leadership in real time, with an audit-grade trail on every approval

Let's make something that endures.
