NYLOS module · Ethiopian payroll software · 2026 guide

HR & Payroll, built for Ethiopia.

NYLOS HR & Payroll is Ethiopian payroll software built by NYLOS Software and Systems PLC in Addis Ababa. It automates the full employee lifecycle for Ethiopian businesses — onboarding, performance, leave, attendance, payroll, severance and offboarding — with native compliance for Labor Proclamation 1156/2019, MOR income tax brackets, POESSA/PSSSA pension contributions, and cost-sharing deductions. It produces EFY-aligned payslips, generates ready-to-upload bank files for major Ethiopian commercial banks, and exports filing-ready income tax and pension summaries.

NYLOS HR & Payroll can be deployed standalone — replacing a separate payroll tool while the rest of your finance system continues — or as part of the full NYLOS ERP suite, sharing one database with finance, inventory, fleet, property and the other 13 modules.

TL;DR

  • Native Ethiopian payroll — income tax, POESSA/PSSSA pension, cost-sharing and severance are core platform behavior, not configuration projects.
  • Labor Proclamation 1156/2019 implemented end-to-end: leave types, overtime premiums, severance bands, probation, termination workflows.
  • Multi-branch payroll on one engine, with per-branch approval chains and entity-level rollup.
  • Bank-file generation for major Ethiopian banks; biometric attendance integration (ZKTeco, Suprema, Anviz).
  • Filing-ready income tax and pension exports — no spreadsheet reshaping before submission.
  • Birr-denominated subscription; compliance updates included.

Why Ethiopian payroll is its own discipline

You can't shortcut Labor Proclamation 1156/2019.

Ethiopian payroll is unforgiving when handled by tools designed for somewhere else. The Labor Proclamation 1156/2019 sets the working-hour ceiling, the leave entitlements, the overtime premium multipliers, the severance formulas by service-year band, the pension rates, and the cost-sharing obligations. Every one of these touches gross-to-net.

MOR (Ministry of Revenue) defines the income tax brackets and the formats in which monthly income tax summaries must arrive. POESSA and PSSSA — the private- and public-sector pension agencies — define pension contribution rates and reporting cycles. EFY (Ethiopian Fiscal Year) begins in Meskerem, meaning the payroll calendar runs out of phase with most global payroll tools.

Foreign payroll tools — QuickBooks Payroll, BambooHR, Sage People, Workday — were built for the labor and tax regimes of the markets they grew in. They can be made to handle Ethiopian payroll, but only through partner-led customizations or external add-on tools — typically kept up to date only as fast as the partner can deliver releases. The result is a payroll team running a foreign engine plus an Ethiopian spreadsheet plus a separate filing routine.

NYLOS HR & Payroll exists because the founders watched too many Ethiopian payroll teams reconcile across three tools every month to produce a single compliant payslip. NYLOS treats Labor Proclamation 1156/2019, MOR income tax rules, POESSA/PSSSA pension reporting and cost-sharing as the spec — not as customizations.

Core features

Twelve capabilities that replace your spreadsheets.

  • 01

    Automated monthly payroll runs

Configure a payroll calendar once. NYLOS computes gross-to-net for every employee — base salary, allowances, overtime, deductions, income tax, pension and cost-sharing — and posts the payroll journal automatically. Approvers see a one-page summary before commit.
  • 02

    Ethiopian income tax engine

Income tax brackets refreshed from MOR publications, including the 2025 revisions effective Hamle 1, 2017 EFY. Income tax computes inline with gross-to-net, never as a post-hoc adjustment.
  • 03

    POESSA/PSSSA pension & cost-sharing

Employee and employer pension contributions calculated at the rates required by Ethiopian pension law, with POESSA/PSSSA-ready monthly summary exports. Education cost-sharing handled in parallel for applicable employees.
  • 04

    Leave accruals & policies

Annual, sick, maternity, paternity, marriage, bereavement and unpaid leave types — accrual policies configurable per role or branch — all aligned with Labor Proclamation 1156/2019.
  • 05

    Overtime & shift premiums

Weekday overtime, weekend, public holiday and night-shift premiums computed per the proclamation's premium rates. Overtime approval routed before it hits payroll.
  • 06

    Severance & end-of-service

Service-year-band severance, notice pay handling and final settlement reporting per the formulas specified in Labor Proclamation 1156/2019.
  • 07

    Multi-branch payroll

Single payroll engine running across multiple branches, with branch-level role permissions, separate approval chains, and consolidated or branch-segmented reports.
  • 08

    Biometric & attendance integration

Connect ZKTeco, Suprema, Anviz or other biometric devices for shift-accurate attendance. Manual attendance also supported. Attendance feeds payroll automatically.
  • 09

    Bank file generation

One-click bank-file exports for the major Ethiopian commercial banks (CBE, Awash, Dashen, Abyssinia and others), formatted for direct upload to corporate banking portals.
  • 10

    EFY-aligned payslips

Payslips render in dual Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY) and Gregorian formats, with Amharic labels available. Distributed via the employee self-service portal or email.
  • 11

    Performance & appraisal

OKR / KPI cycles, 360° feedback, appraisal-linked salary adjustments and promotion workflows — keeping HR conversations connected to payroll outcomes.
  • 12

    Compliance-ready filings

Income tax, pension, cost-sharing and other statutory filings export in formats accepted by MOR, POESSA/PSSSA and the labor office. No external reformatting required.

01 · Income tax

Income tax computed inline, never bolted on.

Ethiopian personal income tax is bracket-based, with rates that rise as taxable monthly income rises. The 2025 reform — effective Hamle 1, 2017 EFY (July 8, 2025) — widened the lower bands and lifted the tax-free threshold, easing the burden on low- and middle-income earners while broadening the scope at the top.

NYLOS implements the current income tax bracket schedule as part of the gross-to-net engine, not as a post-payroll adjustment. Every payslip shows taxable income, the income tax charge per bracket consumed, and the net result. Monthly income tax summary exports are produced in MOR-acceptable format. When MOR refreshes the brackets again, NYLOS rolls the change out to every active customer in the same release cycle.

  • Current MOR bracket schedule, inline
  • Per-payslip taxable income shown
  • Bracket consumption visible per employee
  • MOR-formatted monthly income tax export

02 · Pension & social-security contributions

Employee and employer contributions, automated and audited.

Ethiopian pension is split between employee and employer contributions, paid monthly to the relevant pension authority — POESSA for private-organization employees, PSSSA for public servants. NYLOS computes both contribution sides as part of gross-to-net, accumulates monthly and year-to-date totals per employee, and exports POESSA/PSSSA-ready monthly summary files for direct filing.

Pension rates and pensionable income definitions occasionally change as policy evolves. NYLOS tracks the rates centrally; updates propagate to every active customer on the same release. Historical pension summaries are preserved for audit and remain queryable years after employees leave the company.

03 · Leave & overtime

Every leave type the proclamation recognizes.

Annual leave

Accrual rules per Labor Proclamation 1156/2019, configurable per grade or branch. Carry-over and encashment policies supported.

Sick leave

Accrual, certification requirements and salary-implication rules per the proclamation.

Maternity & paternity

Full statutory periods with appropriate salary handling and leave continuity tracking.

Marriage & bereavement

Special-purpose leave types with configurable durations per company policy and proclamation alignment.

Unpaid leave

Configurable with proper income tax and pension implications calculated automatically.

Overtime

Weekday, weekend, public holiday and night-shift premiums computed per the proclamation's multipliers, with approval routing before payroll.

04 · Severance & end-of-service

Final settlements that survive an audit.

When an employment relationship ends, the Ethiopian Labor Proclamation 1156/2019 defines precise severance entitlements by service-year bands and termination reason. NYLOS computes the severance amount, the notice pay (in lieu or in days), the unused leave encashment, the pro-rated allowances and the final income tax in one final settlement record — with every calculation traceable to the proclamation clause that drives it.

The final settlement is recorded with full audit trail: the user who initiated it, the user who approved it, the calculation breakdown, and any manual overrides with the override rationale. Years later, during an audit or in a labor-court matter, the full reasoning is one click away.

05 · Cost-sharing & statutory deductions

Every deduction that touches gross-to-net.

Higher-education cost-sharing deductions for applicable employees are handled inline with configurable rates and durations. Loan recoveries, salary advances, garnishments, employee savings-plan contributions and union dues all run through the same deduction framework, with prioritization rules ensuring statutory deductions always take precedence over voluntary ones if the gross is insufficient.

06 · Employee self-service (ESS)

Payslips in the employee's pocket.

Every NYLOS HR & Payroll deployment includes the Employee Self-Service portal — a mobile-friendly web app where employees can view historical payslips in EFY or Gregorian formats, check leave balances, request leave with approval routing, and update personal information without HR intervention.

ESS removes a long tail of HR admin work — "can I have a copy of my March payslip?" alone accounts for hours each month in many Ethiopian companies. With ESS, that becomes a self-serve action available on the employee's phone, with full security logging.

07 · Bank, biometric & ERP integrations

Connected to the systems your payroll team already uses.

Ethiopian banks

Bank-file generation for Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), Awash Bank, Dashen Bank, Abyssinia Bank, Hibret Bank, Cooperative Bank of Oromia and others. One-click export, direct upload to the corporate banking portal.

Biometric devices

ZKTeco, Suprema, Anviz, Granding and other devices widely deployed in Ethiopian manufacturing, hospitality and retail. Attendance flows into payroll automatically — no manual upload required.

NYLOS ERP modules

Payroll journals post directly to NYLOS Finance & Accounting. Project labor costs flow to NYLOS Project Management. Cost-center allocations integrate with NYLOS Budgeting. All on one database, no integration layer.

08 · Multi-branch & multi-entity payroll

One engine, many sites.

Many Ethiopian businesses operate from multiple branches — a head office in Addis Ababa, plus regional sites in Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Mekelle, Adama. NYLOS HR & Payroll handles multi-branch operations as a first-class concern: branch-level role permissions, separate approval chains per branch, branch-segmented reporting alongside entity-level rollup, and fully audited cross-branch transfers when employees move.

For groups operating multiple legal entities, NYLOS supports multi-entity payroll on the same instance — each entity with its own MOR registration, its own bank-file accounts, its own filing identity — while still allowing shared employee master data where the company structure permits.

09 · Pricing & licensing

Per active employee, Birr-denominated.

NYLOS HR & Payroll is licensed per active employee per month, with tier discounts for larger headcounts. Pricing is denominated in Ethiopian Birr — no FX exposure, no quarterly renegotiation cycle.

Implementation is quoted once, project-based, at the start of the engagement. Most Ethiopian companies start with HR & Payroll as their phase-1 NYLOS deployment, then add finance, inventory and other modules as the business grows.

Request a tailored quotation on the pricing page and the sales team responds within 24 hours.
