QA engineering is the unsexy specialty that compounds

Software engineering gets the spotlight in Ethiopian tech. Product design gets the visual cool factor. Sales gets the commission stories. QA engineering — quality assurance, ensuring software actually works — gets... less attention. Fewer dedicated QA hires, fewer university programs specifically in QA, fewer LinkedIn posts about QA. And yet, the QA engineers we work with at NYLOS are among the most valuable people on the team, with career trajectories that compound substantially over time.

This article is for engineers who might be a strong fit for QA but haven't considered it, and for hiring managers thinking about whether to invest in QA capability.

What QA engineers actually do

A working definition: QA engineers ensure software does what it's supposed to do — and doesn't do what it's not supposed to. The work spans:

  • Test planning: figuring out what to test and how to test it, for new features and for releases.
  • Test execution: running tests, both manual and automated.
  • Test automation: writing code that runs tests automatically, so they can run hundreds or thousands of times.
  • Regression testing: ensuring new features don't break old features.
  • Performance testing: ensuring software performs adequately under load.
  • Security testing: identifying vulnerabilities before attackers do.
  • Bug investigation: reproducing, isolating and documenting issues so engineers can fix them.
  • Release validation: signing off (or refusing to) on whether software is ready for production.

The work is detail-oriented, systematic and high-leverage. A single QA engineer at NYLOS prevents dozens of customer-impacting issues monthly.

Why QA is undervalued

Three reasons QA gets less attention than it deserves in Ethiopian tech:

  1. Invisible work: QA prevents problems. Prevented problems are invisible by definition. Engineers see the code they ship; QA engineers see the bugs they caught.
  1. Less prestige: "I write code that ships" sounds more important than "I find problems in code others wrote." This perception is wrong but persistent.
  1. Less direct customer impact: engineers can point to features customers use. QA engineers prevent customer pain that customers never experience. Harder to demonstrate.

The undervaluation is a market inefficiency. Engineers who recognize it can build substantial careers in QA.

Skills that matter

Five core skills:

  1. Systematic thinking. Strong QA engineers think in terms of every-possible-input rather than the-happy-path. They naturally consider edge cases.
  2. Communication. QA engineers must write bug reports clearly enough that engineers can reproduce issues, and must communicate verdicts (ready vs not ready) clearly to product and engineering leadership.
  3. Test-automation skill. Modern QA is increasingly automated. Engineers who can write Playwright, Cypress, Selenium or similar test code are more valuable than purely-manual QA.
  4. Domain understanding. QA engineers who understand the business domain (e.g., Ethiopian payroll, accounting rules) catch bugs others miss because they recognize correct vs incorrect behavior.
  5. Patience and persistence. Reproducing tricky bugs takes time. Pursuing root cause matters.

Why QA at NYLOS is especially valuable

NYLOS builds Ethiopian compliance software. Bugs in compliance software aren't just inconvenient — they create real customer compliance exposure. A bug that miscalculates Ethiopian VAT exposes the customer to MOR penalties. A bug in pension calculations exposes the customer to labor-law issues.

This makes NYLOS QA work high-stakes. QA engineers here aren't just catching cosmetic issues; they're preventing customer compliance failures. The work matters.

Compensation

QA compensation in Ethiopian tech historically lagged engineering. By 2026 the gap is closing as employers recognize the value:

  • Junior QA: slightly below junior engineering.
  • Mid-level QA with strong automation skills: comparable to mid-level engineering.
  • Senior QA with domain depth: comparable to or exceeding senior engineering, especially in regulated domains.
  • Lead QA / Test architect: senior engineering compensation.

Career arc

The typical career arc:

  • Year 1-2: QA engineer doing test execution and basic automation. Learning the product and the discipline.
  • Year 3-4: Senior QA engineer owning test strategy for features or product areas. Stronger automation capability.
  • Year 5+: Lead QA, Test Architect, or pivot into adjacent roles (DevOps, Security Engineering, Product Management).

QA experience translates well to security engineering (similar mindset), DevOps (release validation overlap), and product management (the systematic thinking transfers). Some QA engineers also move into engineering after building software-engineering skills on the side; QA-then-engineering is a strong path.

What NYLOS looks for in QA engineers

When NYLOS hires QA engineers:

  • Systematic thinking. We test this in interviews with edge-case questions.
  • Communication. We ask candidates to walk through a bug report they wrote.
  • Automation capability. We don't require Playwright/Cypress experience but candidates who have it are immediately useful.
  • Domain interest. QA engineers who find Ethiopian payroll or VAT genuinely interesting outperform those who treat it as drudgery.
  • Attention to detail. The discipline matters.

What QA candidates should look for in employers

Five things to evaluate:

  1. Is QA respected here? Look at who reports to whom, how QA is involved in decisions, whether QA verdicts override engineering schedules.
  2. What's the automation maturity? QA without automation is unsustainable; companies still doing purely manual QA after years are signs of weak engineering culture.
  3. What's the career path? Companies with no senior QA roles offer junior careers, not durable ones.
  4. What's the team like? QA engineers work closely with engineers and PMs. Toxic relationships poison the discipline.
  5. What's the product? QA work compounds with domain expertise; pick a domain you find interesting.

A note for engineers considering QA

If you're an engineer wondering whether QA might be a better fit than pure development:

  • The skills overlap substantially. You can develop while doing QA.
  • The career compounds. Senior QA engineers in regulated domains are highly valuable.
  • The work is less performative and more impactful than the perception suggests.
  • The variety can be broader than narrow specialization in one engineering area.

QA isn't second-tier. It's a different specialization that compounds over time. Open QA roles on [/careers](/careers).
