NYLOS module · Ethiopian accounting software · 2026 guide

Finance & Accounting, built for Ethiopia.

NYLOS Finance & Accounting is Ethiopian accounting software built by NYLOS Software and Systems PLC in Addis Ababa. It is a full double-entry general ledger with multi-branch, multi-currency and multi-cost-center support; native handling for Ethiopian VAT, withholding tax and TOT; MOR-compliant invoicing; and IFRS for SMEs-aligned financial reporting.

It produces audit-grade transaction trails accepted by every major Ethiopian audit firm, automates amortization journals for prepaid expenses and accruals, reconciles bank statements through CSV / OFX / MT940 imports or direct bank APIs, and supports multi-entity consolidation for groups operating multiple legal entities. NYLOS Finance & Accounting runs standalone — replacing Peachtree, QuickBooks or Sage — or as part of the full NYLOS ERP suite alongside HR & Payroll, Inventory, Manufacturing, Fleet and 10 other modules.

TL;DR

  • Native Ethiopian taxes — VAT, withholding, TOT and excise as core platform behavior, not configuration projects.
  • MOR-compliant invoices generated in the format MOR accepts. One-click declaration exports.
  • Full IFRS for SMEs financial statements — P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow (direct & indirect), Statement of Changes in Equity.
  • Multi-branch, multi-currency, multi-cost-center — on one database with no consolidation layer.
  • Automated bank reconciliation, prepaid amortization and period close with full audit trail.
  • Birr-denominated subscription; compliance updates included.

Why Ethiopian accounting is its own discipline

Generic accounting software can't carry the weight.

Ethiopian accounting is not just bookkeeping with different invoice templates. MOR publishes invoice formats with specific required fields, layout conventions and serial number rules. Withholding-tax thresholds differ by transaction type. TOT and VAT co-exist — applicable to different businesses depending on registration status — and switching between them follows a regulated path.

The Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY) starts in Meskerem (around September 11), out of phase with the Gregorian calendar most foreign accounting tools assume. Cross-border trade exposes most Ethiopian businesses to USD letters of credit, Birr-denominated domestic payments, and revaluation cycles every month-end. Multi-branch operations are the rule, not the exception.

Foreign accounting tools like QuickBooks, Sage, FreshBooks and Xero were built for the tax and regulatory regimes of their home markets. They can be configured to handle Ethiopian VAT and withholding through user-defined tax codes, but the invoice format compliance, the declaration export, the TOT mode and the IFRS for SMEs presentation typically require external tools or partner-led customization — which then drifts as MOR publishes updates.

NYLOS Finance & Accounting exists because Ethiopian finance teams should not be running a foreign GL plus a separate VAT calculator plus a spreadsheet for MOR declarations. NYLOS treats Ethiopian tax compliance, IFRS for SMEs and multi-branch reality as the spec — not as configurations.

Core features

Twelve capabilities that replace your stack.

  • 01

    Double-entry general ledger

Multi-branch, multi-currency, multi-cost-center general ledger. Every transaction posts a balanced double-entry with full audit annotation. Configurable chart of accounts, supports IFRS for SMEs templates with industry-specific overrides.
  • 02

    MOR-compliant VAT engine

Sales and purchase invoices generated in formats accepted by the Ministry of Revenue. Input and output VAT tracked through dedicated control accounts. Periodic VAT liability computed inline. Declaration-ready exports for monthly MOR filings.
  • 03

    Withholding tax automation

Supplier payments meeting withholding thresholds are flagged automatically, tax computed at the applicable rate, and withholding certificates generated for the supplier. Period-end declarations export in MOR-acceptable summary format.
  • 04

    AR / AP with aging

Customer invoicing, supplier bills, statement runs and automated payment reminders. Aging reports at any cut-off date, broken down by customer or supplier, with drill-down to source documents.
  • 05

    Bank reconciliation

Import bank statements (CSV, OFX, MT940) or pull through the bank's API where available. The reconciliation engine matches transactions automatically; remaining items are resolved through a side-by-side interface.
  • 06

    Multi-currency & FX revaluation

Books are kept in Ethiopian Birr; foreign-currency transactions are recorded at transaction-date rates with revaluation at month-end. Realized and unrealized FX gain/loss posts to the appropriate GL accounts automatically.
  • 07

    Cost-center & dimensional reporting

Tag every transaction by branch, project, department, donor or other configurable dimensions. Run P&L and Balance Sheet by any dimension or combination — without leaving the ledger.
  • 08

    Period close & lock

Period close workflow with pre-close trial balance, locking by user role, post-close adjustments through a controlled journal entry route, and full audit trail of every period transition.
  • 09

    Automated amortization journals

Prepaid expenses, accruals, deferred revenue and other periodic adjustments are scheduled and posted automatically — with full audit trail and one-click reversals where adjustments are wrong.
  • 10

    IFRS-aligned financial statements

Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow (direct and indirect), Statement of Changes in Equity, and Notes — produced directly from the GL in IFRS for SMEs presentation, exportable to PDF or Excel.
  • 11

    Configurable KPI dashboards

Role-based dashboards with the metrics each user actually needs — revenue, margin, days sales outstanding, days payables outstanding, working capital, cash position — refreshing from the live ledger.
  • 12

    Audit-grade activity log

Every create, update and delete logs the user, timestamp, prior value and new value. Approvals are logged with the approver's identity. The log is queryable in-platform and exportable for audits.

01 · VAT — Value Added Tax

MOR-compliant invoices, one-click declarations.

Ethiopian VAT is a 15% standard-rated tax (with limited zero-rated and exempt items) applicable to VAT-registered businesses. The MOR specifies required invoice fields: supplier and customer TIN, item description, quantity, unit price, VAT rate, VAT amount, invoice serial number from an MOR-authorized range, and the legally-required headings and footers.

NYLOS generates VAT invoices in the MOR-compliant format directly from the platform — no external tool, no manual reformatting. Input VAT on purchase invoices and output VAT on sales invoices flow into dedicated control accounts in the GL. At month-end, the VAT liability is computed inline; the declaration export is one click in MOR-acceptable format. When VAT payment is made to MOR, the payment journal posts automatically.

02 · Withholding tax

Tracked automatically, certified instantly.

Ethiopian withholding tax applies to supplier payments meeting threshold and transaction-type conditions. The rate varies by transaction class — supplies of goods, services, professional fees, rent — and the threshold differs by registration status of the supplier. Getting any of this wrong creates penalty exposure for the paying business.

NYLOS flags every supplier payment that meets a withholding threshold, applies the applicable rate based on the transaction type and supplier registration, generates a withholding certificate for the supplier (in MOR-acceptable format), and accrues the withholding liability in the GL. Period-end summaries export in the format MOR expects for declaration.

03 · TOT — Turnover Tax

For businesses below the VAT threshold.

Ethiopian businesses with annual turnover below the VAT registration threshold operate in TOT mode. TOT applies a lower tax rate to gross turnover and uses a different invoice format than VAT. The distinction matters: a business in TOT mode that issues VAT invoices, or vice versa, creates compliance exposure at both ends of the transaction.

NYLOS supports VAT mode or TOT mode per legal entity. Tax codes, invoice templates and declaration exports adapt to the selected mode. When a business crosses the threshold and must transition from TOT to VAT, NYLOS handles the switch as a configuration change with full audit trail — the date of the transition, the user who approved it, and the carry-over treatment for in-flight transactions all preserved.

04 · IFRS for SMEs & financial statements

Books your auditor recognises immediately.

Chart of accounts templates

Pre-built CoA templates aligned to IFRS for SMEs, with industry-specific overrides for manufacturing, microfinance, real estate, NGOs and trading firms.

Profit & Loss

Function-of-expense or nature-of-expense presentation, per IFRS for SMEs Section 5. Multi-period comparison, branch and cost-center segmentation.

Balance Sheet

Current/non-current presentation per IFRS for SMEs Section 4, with full drill-down to underlying GL accounts.

Cash Flow Statement

Direct method and indirect method, both available — per IFRS for SMEs Section 7, with comparative period.

Statement of Changes in Equity

Per IFRS for SMEs Section 6, with dividend and share capital movements tracked from source documents.

Notes & disclosures

Configurable note templates aligned to IFRS for SMEs disclosure requirements, regenerated each period from the live ledger.

05 · Multi-currency & FX

Birr functional, FX revalued monthly.

Ethiopian businesses operate with the Birr as the functional currency but trade with foreign suppliers and customers in USD, EUR, GBP, AED and others. NYLOS records every foreign-currency transaction at the transaction-date exchange rate, maintains both the Birr value and the original currency value, and revalues open foreign-currency balances at month-end using the prevailing rate.

Realized FX gain/loss posts when foreign-currency receivables or payables settle. Unrealized FX gain/loss posts at month-end revaluation. Both go to designated GL accounts per IFRS for SMEs Section 30. Rate sources can be the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) indicative daily rate, a custom company rate per period, or a third-party feed.

06 · Multi-branch & multi-cost-center

One ledger, many dimensions.

Every transaction in NYLOS can carry up to five configurable dimensions — branch, cost center, project, department, donor or any other label the business uses. Reports — P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow — can be sliced by any dimension or combination, without leaving the ledger and without a separate analytics layer.

For groups operating multiple legal entities, NYLOS supports multi-entity consolidation on the same instance. Each entity has its own MOR registration, its own currency footing if needed, and its own filing identity, while consolidation reports roll up at the group level with elimination of inter-company balances.

07 · Bank reconciliation

Match transactions in seconds, not days.

Bank reconciliation in many Ethiopian finance teams is a multi-day monthly exercise: download the bank statement, print it, tick off transactions by hand against the cash book, chase the variances. NYLOS replaces it with a side-by-side reconciliation interface.

Import bank statements via CSV, OFX or MT940. For banks with API access, pull statements directly. The reconciliation engine auto-matches transactions to GL entries based on amount, date and reference. Unmatched items surface for resolution: missing journal entries, timing differences, bank fees not yet booked. Once resolved, the period reconciliation is locked and preserved with full audit trail.

Read the deep-dive: Bank reconciliation in Ethiopia — how to automate the monthly close.

08 · Audit trail & period close

Every change accounted for.

Every create, update and delete on every record logs the user, timestamp, prior value and new value. Approvals are logged with the approver's identity and any comments. The activity log is queryable in-platform and exportable for audits.

Period close follows a structured workflow: pre-close trial balance review, lock by user role (so transactions cannot be back-dated into a closed period), controlled post-close adjustments through a dedicated journal entry route, and full audit trail of every period transition. Closed periods can only be re-opened by an authorized user, with the reason logged.

When an audit firm — EY, KPMG, PwC, BDO, Deloitte or others — opens an engagement, NYLOS produces the full transaction trail, approval history, source-document linkages and tax-by-tax-code analyses on demand. Audit preparation that used to consume weeks now takes hours.

09 · Integrations

Connected to the systems your finance team already uses.

Ethiopian banks

Statement imports (CSV / OFX / MT940) from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), Awash Bank, Dashen Bank, Abyssinia Bank, Hibret Bank, Cooperative Bank of Oromia and others. Direct API connections where the bank exposes them. Bank-file generation for supplier payments and payroll disbursement.

NYLOS ERP modules

Payroll journals from NYLOS HR & Payroll. Inventory cost roll-up from NYLOS Inventory. Production cost from NYLOS Manufacturing. Project labor from NYLOS Project Management. Fixed asset depreciation from NYLOS Fixed Asset Management. All on one database, no integration layer.

External BI & analytics

NYLOS exposes a REST API across every module. Connect Power BI, Tableau, Metabase, Looker or any other BI tool for advanced analytics layered on top of the live ledger.

10 · Pricing & licensing

Per active user, Birr-denominated.

NYLOS Finance & Accounting is licensed per active user per month, with tier discounts as the user count grows. Pricing is denominated in Ethiopian Birr — no FX exposure, no quarterly renegotiation cycle.

Implementation is quoted once, project-based, at the start of the engagement. Most Ethiopian businesses migrating from Peachtree, QuickBooks or Sage start with NYLOS Finance & Accounting plus a few related modules, then add the rest as the business grows.
